WILDHAUS
THE VACATION is based in Wildhaus in the St. Gall Canton, to the
east of Zurich.
Wildhaus is approximately 50 miles south east of Zurich and 15 miles
south of Appenzell at an altitude of 3,650 feet. It lies between the
series of spectacular northeast/southwest running mountain ranges around
Santis in the north and the dramatic Churfirsten ranges to the south.
If you stood on the Augstenburg above Malbun in Liechtenstein you would
see these great mountains beckoning from across the Rhine Valley ! Peaks
like Hinterrugg, Sichelchamm, Gamser Rugg and Gamsberg in the south
and the Wildhauser Shafberg and Santis to the north rise to between
7200 and 8500 feet.
The hotel has been selected for its high quality in terms of rooms, service, ambience and food ! You stay for 7 nights at the lovely family run Hotel Hirschen, a superior three star hotel with 72 bedrooms. All the bedrooms have en suite facilities and all have colour television, radio, self dial telephone & minibar. The hotel has a comfortable lounge, an excellent restaurant, bar, hairdresser, two bowling alleys, an indoor swimming pool, a spa with sauna, whirlpool & fitness equipment, a garden, table tennis, billiard table and a lift.
TRAVEL
Travel from Zurich and within Switzerland will be by deluxe coach or
passenger vans, train, mountain railway, post-bus, cable car or chair
lift, as appropriate.
FLIGHTS.
Footloose Europe does not arrange flights to Switzerland. We can however
assist you by putting you in touch with suitable Travel Agents.
THE HIKING PROGRAMME
You will hike in fabulous scenic surroundings. Cable cars, chair lifts,
post-bus services and mountain railways open up a great variety of terrain
and enable you to reach higher altitudes without the strain of climbing
up unaided ! The rolling Alpine pastures give way to towering peaks
with dramatic views and walks at all grades. Hikes will generally be
at grades 2 & 3 but will be tailored to the abilities of the party.
Where we have two leaders there is the option of more challenging hikes
for those who prefer.
THE HIKING GRADES.
The hiking programme is designed at Footloose Grades 2 & 3. With
two Leaders we can offer a choice of two hikes on each of the 9 or 10
walking days. Where we have only one leader the hikes will be a mix
of two grades. I every case the distances and ascents / descents can
be modified to suit the needs and abilities of the group members but
will generally be :-
Grade 2 : Up to 3,000 feet of ascent / descent, on way-marked paths.
Terrain may be steeply inclined and rough underfoot, with loose rock
at times. Snow may be encountered at higher levels. Distances 10-15
miles.
Grade 3 : Up to 1,500 feet of ascent / descent, on way-marked paths.
Terrain may be steeply inclined at times and rough underfoot, with possibly
loose rock. Distances usually 5 - 8 miles.
NON-HIKING EXCURSIONS.
There are a number of excellent excursion possibilities from the resort.
From Wildhaus you can visit Vaduz and Liechtenstein’s other attractions,
whilst Bregenz & Lindau on Lake Constance are easily reachable.

Flights to/from Zurich ; Lunches ; insurance (we consider medical and
accident & emergency cover, including repatriation expenses to the
USA. is essential) ; optional extra sightseeing excursions (details
will be advised by the Footloose Leaders) ; single room supplements
; admissions to castles, museums etc. ; local transportation costs not
part of the walking programme ; items of a personal nature, e.g. drinks,
telephone calls etc.
ZURICH EXTENSION.
At the end of the holiday you will have the option of extending your
stay in Zurich for as many days as you wish. We feel this is a wise
step and takes away much of the stress of getting to the airport for
earlier flights. If you prefer to spend some time in Zurich, please
advise the number of nights and the class of hotel you prefer - we will
