THE HOLIDAY
This one week holiday will take you a on a series of memorable walks
in the beautiful and unspoilt Atlantic Island of Madeira. The holiday
starts with your arrival at Funchal Airport, from where you will be
transferred to your hotel. You will stay in the outskirts of the capital
Funchal. The walks will mostly follow the Levadas, alongside the irrigation
channels for the vineyards, overlooking beautiful valleys ; over stepping
stones, across bridges and through arches in the rocks ; through pastureland,
with sunlit panoramas of majestic mountains, proud valleys, and the
tranquility of the north coast villages ; by 25 famous water falls set
amidst wild vegetation ; via apple orchards, banana and sugar cane plantations
and delightful fishing villages, beside the incredibly blue Atlantic
waters. Views are spectacular with a wealth of wonderful flowers, both
growing wild and in pretty gardens.
ACCOMMODATION
In Madeira you will stay in the beautiful 4 star Hotel Quinta do Sol,
which is in Funchal, the capital, on the south coast of the island.
It is located in the countryside but within easy walking distance of
the old city centre. The hotel has two restaurants, two bars, an elevator,
a garden, an outdoor swimming pool and a small fitness centre. The 156
bedrooms have king or queen beds, en suite bathrooms, hair dryer, safe,
minibar, air conditioning, balcony, cable/satellite TV and direct dial
telephone.
THE WALKING PROGRAMME
The programme is designed to offer superb walking at Grades 3 and 4,
as described overleaf but the actual walks are always tailored to suit
each individual group. With one experienced Footloose Leader and a local
Guide, we offer a choice of two walks on each of the 5 walking days,
thus accommodating most degrees of ability
NON-WALKING EXCURSIONS
During the holiday there will be one free day, when you can relax and
do your own thing, or join one or more of our optional extra sightseeing
excursions.
FLIGHTS
Footloose Adventure Travel holds ATOL No. T7121 and will be delighted
to arrange your flights for you. By ensuring that you are booking direct
with an ATOL holder you can rest assured that your flights are financially
protected. Note this applies only to flights ex the U.K.
TRAVEL
Within Madeira will be by deluxe coach or comfortable mini-bus from
Funchal Airport to your hotel and return. Local transport will be by
private coach / mini-bus / local service bus as appropriate.

THE WALKING PROGRAMME
The walking programme is designed at FootLoose Grades 3 & 4. With
two Leaders we can offer a choice of two walks on each of the 5 walking
days. The distances and ascents / descents may be modified to suit the
needs and abilities of the group members but will generally be :-
Grade 3 : Up to 1,500 feet of ascent / descent, on way-marked paths.
Terrain may be steeply inclined at times and rough underfoot, with possibly
some loose rock. Distances 5 - 8 miles.
Grade 4 : Up to about 750 feet of ascent or descent, generally on manicured,
way-marked paths. Terrain may be fairly steep but for only short sections.
Distances usually 3-5 miles.
THE PRICE INCLUDES
* 7 nights hotel accommodation in twin/double rooms, with private bathroom
& toilet.
* 7 evening meals with breakfast each morning.
* All the transport costs necessary to fulfil the walking programme.
* Airport transfers from Funchal Airport to the hotel and return.
* Services of one FootLoose Leader and one local guide
* All local service charges and taxes.
THE PRICE DOES NOT INCLUDE
Flights to/from Funchal ; Lunches ; insurance (strongly recommended
!) ; optional extra sightseeing excursions (details will be advised
by the FootLoose Leader) ; single room supplements ; admissions to castles,
museums etc. ; local transportation costs not part of the walking programme
; items of a personal nature, e.g. drinks, telephone calls etc.
TRIP EXTENSION
If you wish to spend a few days in Madeira or Lisbon we can arrange
hotels and other services for you at extra cost. In this case please
give us as much notice as possible.
