Spectacular Hiking in the Julian Alps
The Julian Alps jagged snow capped peaks, culminating in Mt. Triglav at 9,394 ft., contrast with fertile valleys full of colour and activity. The Karst limestone landscape creates a fascinating plethora of caves, underground rivers cascading out of rock faces, dramatic waterfalls, high cliffs and narrow steep gorges. The valleys are full of meadows, cornfields, hopfields, orchards and vegetable gardens and of course wildflowers are everywhere. The delightful enchanting villages have colourful window boxes and the area has everything needed for a superb mountain walking holiday.
THE RESORTS
The attractive village resorts of BOHINJ & KRANJSKA GORA are located
in the beautiful Julian Alps, just across the Slovenian border from
Italy. Both are unspoilt and offer a wide range of hiking possibilities.
Bohinj lies on a lovely lake of the same name, at an altitude of around
1800 feet, in the heart of the Triglav National Park.
Slovenia’s most visited tourist resort of Lake Bled is just 10
miles away from Kranjska Gora, which is situated at an altitude of around
2,650 feet. The old village gives a picture of a typical alpine village,
set in a wide valley surrounded by dramatic peaks.
THE HOTELS
In BOHINJ you will stay for 7 nights at the Superior 3 star Hotel Jezero.
The hotel is located centrally by the lake and has 63 rooms and three
suites. Rooms have direct telephone link, cable TV, mini bar, hairdryer
and most of rooms have safe and balcony with seats. There is an Internet
cafe in hotel lobby, boot room and parking in front of the building.
In KRANJSKA GORA you will stay for 7 nights at the excellent 4 star
Hotel Kompas. This has comfortable lounges, an excellent restaurant,
a bar, lift, sauna, exercise room and an indoor swimming pool. All bedrooms
have private bathrooms, T.V. and telephone. Non-smoking rooms are available.
THE HIKING PROGRAMME
The programme is designed to offer superb walking at Grades 2 and 3,
but the actual walks are always tailored to suit each individual group.
With one experienced Footloose Leader and a local waiking guide, we
offer a choice of two hikes on each of the 10 hiking days, thus accommodating
most degrees of ability. The cables and lifts will carry you to rolling
alpine meadow areas, for easier mountain hiking. These in turn lead
to higher, more strenuous options, for those who prefer something more
demanding.
NON-HIKING EXCURSIONS
During the holiday there will be two free days, when you can relax and
do your own thing, or join one or more of our optional extra sightseeing
excursions. Possibilities include Lake Bled, the capital Ljubljana,
which has a delightfully restored historic old town and the famous Postojna
Caves.
TRAVEL
Within Slovenia will be by deluxe coach or comfortable passenger van,
depending on the size of the group, from Ljubljana Airport to your hotel
and return. Local transport will be by private coach / passenger van,
local service bus, cable car or chair lift as appropriate.
THE HIKING GRADES
The hiking programme is designed at Footloose Grades 2 & 3. With
two Leaders we can offer a choice of two hikes on each of the 10 hiking
days. The distances and ascents / descents may be modified to suit the
needs and abilities of the group members but will generally be :-
Grade 2 : Up to 3,000 feet of ascent / descent, on way-marked paths.
Terrain may be steeply inclined and rough underfoot, with loose rock
at times. Snow may be encountered at higher levels. Distances 10-15
miles.
Grade 3 : Up to 1,500 feet of ascent / descent, on way-marked paths.
Terrain may be steeply inclined at times and rough underfoot, with possibly
some loose rock. Distances 5 - 8 miles.
Note : On some Grade 2 walks, more strenuous extensions may be offered
but only at the request of the members of the party.
