The Engadine - 11 Nights
Wonderful walking in Switzerland's Upper & Lower Engadine
THE REGION. The Engadine is one of the most beautiful regions of Switzerland, being a long linear valley descending from the Maloja Pass in the Upper Engadine, through Sils Maria, Silvaplana, St. Moritz and Samedan,then the Lower Engadine through Zernez, Susch, Guarda and Schuol to Nauders on the Austrian border. The valley is surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks and the river flows through a number of pretty lakes.
THE HOLIDAY is designed as a Linear Hike, with baggage being transferred between resorts, leaving you free to hike with just a day sack. It starts with your arrival at Zurich Airport from where you will be transferred to your first base at Sils Maria, a delightful village in the Upper Engadine, where you stay for three nights. This is followed by 3 nights in the popular resort of Pontresina and then a real treat, one night at the Mountain Hotel Muottas Muragl. Two nights in the town of Zernez and 2 nights in the village of Guarda, both in the Lower Engadine and close to the Swiss National Park, complete the vacation. At the end of the trip you will be transferred back to Zurich Airport.
THE HOTELS have all been carefully selected to give a high degree of comfort with great Swiss cuisine. All the bedrooms have, of course, en suite bathrooms. In particular the Muottas Muragl has a superb mountain top location with vast panoramas across the surrounding mountains. It is reached from the south by a funicular railway. An overnight here is a memorable experience.
TRAVEL Travel from Zurich and within Switzerland will be by deluxe coach or by minibus, train, mountain railway, post-bus, cable car or chair lift, as appropriate.
FLIGHTS. Footloose Adventure Travel holds ATOL No. T7121 and will be delighted to arrange your flights for you. By ensuring that you are booking direct with an ATOL holder you can rest assured that your flights are financially protected. Note this applies only to flights ex the U.K.
THE WALKING PROGRAMME You will walk in fabulous scenic surroundings. Cable cars, chair lifts, post-bus services and mountain railways open up a great variety of terrain and enable you to reach higher altitudes without the strain of climbing up unaided ! The rolling Alpine pastures give way to towering peaks with dramatic views and walks at all grades. Hikes will generally be at grades 2 & 3 but will be tailored to the abilities of the party. Where we have two leaders there is the option of more challenging hikes for those who prefer.
THE WALKING GRADES. The walking programme is designed at FootLoose
Grades 2 & 3. With two Leaders we can offer a choice of two walks
on each of the 9 or 10 walking days. Where we have only one leader the
walks will be a mix of two grades. In every case the distances and ascents
/ descents can be modified to suit the needs and abilities of the group
members but will generally be :-
Grade 2 : Up to 3,000 feet of ascent / descent, on way-marked paths.
Terrain may be steeply inclined and rough underfoot, with loose rock
at times. Snow may be encountered at higher levels. Distances 10-15
miles.
Grade 3 : Up to 1,500 feet of ascent / descent, on way-marked paths.
Terrain may be steeply inclined at times and rough underfoot, with possibly
loose rock. Distances usually 5 - 8 miles.

NON-WALKING EXCURSIONS. There are a number of excellent excursion possibilities from the resorst. From Sils Maria you can visit St. Moritz, Davos, Arosa or Lake Como, whilst from Zernez Liechtenstein, Bregenz and Innsbruck are easily reachable.
THE PRICE INCLUDES

& toilet, in good quality 3 star hotels.

* All transport costs necessary to fulfil the walking programme.
* Airport transfers from Zurich Airport to the hotel and return, by

THE PRICE DOES NOT INCLUDE
Flights to/from Zurich ; Lunches ; insurance (we consider medical and
accident & emergency cover, including repatriation expenses to the
UK. is essential) ; optional extra sightseeing excursions (details will
be advised by the FootLoose Leaders) ; single room supplements ; admissions
to castles, museums etc. ; local transportation costs not part of the
walking programme ; items of a personal nature, e.g. drinks, telephone
calls etc.
ZURICH EXTENSION. At the end of the holiday you will have the option of extending your stay in Zurich for as many days as you wish. We feel this is a wise step and takes away much of the stress of getting to the airport for earlier flights.
